Valerian has been an esteemed medicinal remedy since Classical times. It is particularly effective as a sleep aid because it contains linarin, a chemical that acts as a sedative by calming activity in the central nervous system. Not only used for sleep, it's strongly analgesic and sedating properties, Valerian is indicated where there is strong pain. It is particularly helpful to help calm anxiety and reduce stress.
Brew as a tea, add 1 cup boiling water to 1 teaspoon (2g – 3g) valerian root, steep for 5 minutes and strain if necessary. For best results take 2 hours to 1/2 hour before bed. When mixed with chamomile, vervain, Valerian root can be effectively used for fighting insomnia.
